Improve your communication skills

"3 communication mistakes everyone makes - and how to overcome them."

Lloyd Allen,

Lecturer Practitioner,

The Royal Marsden School

We’re not actually listening

Build up trust by listening to what the patient says, and avoid entering a conversation with ready-made impressions.

We become solution-focused

Give patients time to react to news and give their perspective, and don't speed through to talking about treatment.

We don’t practice empathy

Research shows empathy has a positive impact on our emotional state, so resist the urge to fill silences and allow the patient time to process what you're saying.

Advanced Communication Skills Training

Here at The Royal Marsden School we offer a two-day Advanced Communication Skills Training course to all senior health and social care professionals (band 6 and above).

Our classes are small, with a maximum of ten students, so we can give you tailored support to work through challenging communication situations that you may have encountered in practice.

Sign up to our Education Matters newsletter to find out more about this course, others we offer and to get practical advice from our expert lecturers.

"I loved the interactive nature of the class."

- Jane Spurr, Critical Care Outreach Sister
